The Gurd Award

The Gurd Award was established as a memorial to the work of Pat and Maurice Gurd.
It has been running since 1990.

Nanda invites member groups to submit nominations for this annual award of a token valued around £40 through the Pat and Maurice Gurd Bequest Fund.

It is to promote a recognition of the contributions to the theatre of the true amateur, someone who genuinely contributes out of a love of the theatre, seeking to attract no personal glory nor public acclamation, but taking satisfaction from a personal sense of achievement.

Pat (or Aileen) Gurd was Chairman of Nanda from 1963 - 1976 and subsequently a Vice President. She contributed significantly, not only to the development of the Association but to the promotion of high standards in member groups, assisting many of them by acting as producer of their plays or by providing objective and constructive assessment.

Dr Maurice Gurd served amateur theatre in the Nottingham area for over 40 years and was made Vice President for his services. He contributed significantly to every aspect of theatre arts and craft assisting with staged productions by amateurs as producer, set designer and stage manager. He was particularly fond of music and co-ordinated Nanda's first playwriting competition.
